Non Exec Director

Journey So Far

The contents of this page are essentially a marketing excercise, where the intention is to give a little information surrounding Jon’s experience and journey in an advisory capacity.

It also attempts to contrast the two seemingly different career paths he’s focussed on.  Firstly from a Research & Development, corporate and commercial energy science perspective, including from the business administration side of things, and secondly, from a spiritual, personal development, health and wellbeing, energy healing, and mental health perspective.

A more detailed account of his experience in each field can be seen under the ‘Energy Sector’ and ‘Health & Wellbeing’ pages from the main menu at the top of the page.

Intention:

As a result of his two primary pursuits, Jon is open to working with companies from within the physical energy sector, and also the health and wellbeing and personal development sector, and particularly with respect to contributing towards realigning humanity in harmonisation with the earth at this time.

Academic Career:

Jonathan (Jon) completed his undergraduate degree in Mechanical, Materials and Manufacture Engineering at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, in 1997, where he specialised in Materials Science.  During his final year, he published his first academic paper, and the work that he concluded during his dissertation project contributed to a commercial product that was used during construction of one of the bridges in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

He went on to complete his Doctorate in Materials/ Mathematics/ Energy at the University of Oxford, UK, in 2001.  The energy modelling that he developed was used by a PVD coating company in the US for quality control and optimisation purposes, and his work has been cited hundreds of times by subsequent researchers since he first published it.

Thesis: “Indentation Design for Coated Systems”

Physical Energy & Commercial Career:

From a battery and ‘physical’ energy perspective, after his academic career, he started his industrial career with Johnson Mattey Fuel Cells in 2001, working with proton exchange membranes and membrane electrode assemblies surrounding hydrogen fuel cells.

He then did a stint in refractory metals, which saw him developing tooling for Friction Stir Welding (FSW), where he led the first team in the world to commercially FSW thick section steel, and also contributed to the manufacture of the Eclipse airliner in around 2006.  The full-scale test craft that he worked on is now on display outside the premises of The Welding Institute in Cambridge, UK, as seen in the image below.

In 2007 Jon invested in an MBA-like training course, and subsequently co-founded a company who developed super-capacitors in 2014.  With ‘Zap&Go’, formally ‘London Graphene’, he was responsible for the science behind the product.  He was involved in business strategy and planning, fund raising, and pitching to potential investors.  The company was started when they raised $120k through a crowd funding platform in 2014.  As Chief Scientific Officer, Jon established a team of scientists and engineers, and laboratory facilities at Oxfords Rutherford Appleton Laboratories, and led them to develop Gen 0 devices at Warwick Manufacturing Group, and then Gen 1 and Gen 2 devices at AGM Batteries in North Scotland.

The ZapGo Charger

My team thought I was bonkers for wanting to cut the supercapacitor in half (fully discharged), so I got my hands dirty in the lab!

This video is demonstrating an early prototype for using ZapGo supercapacitors in an electric drill application.

This video shows early investigation of the potential to take ZapGo supercapacitors to 6V – I got quite excited, but for reasons that we subsequently established, the life cycling at this voltage was not sustainable

During his time with Zap&Go, they were featured on:

  • ‘The Gadget Show’ – 2016
  • ‘BBC Click’ – 2016

And were awarded:

  • IBM ‘Best New Product Innovation of the Year 2015
  • Red Herring Top 100 Europe 16 – 2016
  • Future 50 Scientific Breakthrough Award 16 – Mar 2016
  • UK Business Angels Association – Award Finalist 16 – Jul 2016

Jon took some time out in 2017 and wrote a personal development book, and in 2018 he simultaneously embarked upon his Non Exec Director (NED)/Board /Technical Advisory services whilst expanding his energy storage knowledge and experience by joining AGM Batteries (who became AMTE Power in 2020).

As a Board/Technical Advisor, Jon has worked with start-up companies in the battery industry, and also the health and wellbeing arena.

One example of an exciting start-up that Jon worked with combined the development of Sodium-ion (Na-ion) and Solid State Batteries (SSB).  Natrion Inc. are based in the US, and are well positioned to make significant impact within the energy storage industry.

With AMTE Power he wore many hats, and primarily became responsible for development and coordination of their Intellectual Property portfolio.

This was great as he had an access all areas pass to all technology being developed and conceived across the board of energy storage technologies, including numerous configurations of Lithium-ion, Sodium-ion, Solid State Batteries, Lithium-metal and Silicon anode, and Smart Cell technology.

AMTE Power was bought by LION Volt in January 2024, and Jon was made redundant, since they only bought the assets and staff in Thurso, and he was remotely located.

So, right now, he’s excited to be embarking on the next stage of his career, and a big part of that is in finding companies who he resonates with, and who he buys into, and who are in need of a global business advisor/NED, for high level support and advice.

Working with Actuate Global, an NED coaching firm, it was identified that his skill set was missing critical financial knowledge, so in April 2024 he attended a training course, “Finance for non-financial Non Executive Directors”, which gave him essential insights into how to interpret financial data, and the questions to ask at board level, and the warning signs to be aware of.

Here I describe my advice on how to set solid foundations for a start-up business

Healing, Wellbeing & Spiritual Development:

As a result of a life changing event at the age of 8, Jon started studying human psychology at the age of around 14.

By the age of 21 he’d established an understanding of the significance of binary code, which he saw as an insight into how the brain works, and how the first computer may have been conceived.

In his 20’s and 30’s, after multiple operations to correct length deficiency caused by the accident, the (pharmaceutical) drugs didn’t work, and his constant physical pain led him to investigate and find alternative solutions, which allowed him to explore the other medicines and remedies available.  In around 2012, he was diagnosed with high cholesterol and put on Statins.  After a year of constant illness caused by the pharmaceutical drug, his Mother-in-Law-at-the-time suggested he used a simple out-of-the-kitchen-cupboard remedy, which he swapped for the medication, and was cured in a month.  This fuelled the questions that he was beginning to ask, and he turned his interest to herbal remedies.  This in turn led to deep research into other known healing remedies, practices, and techniques.

Jon’s spiritual Journey began to tread a more consistent path in 2014, and he has consistently researched and experimenting with known natural and holistic remedies/approaches ever since.

In 2017 Jon embarked upon a journey into Reiki energy healing.  His primary incentive for investigating this was to see if he could begin to explain the phenomenon using his basic understanding of quantum physics.  By 2021 he had progressed to becoming a Reiki Master Teacher, and was asked to provide a day seminar that attempted to explain energy healing using quantum physics.  At this time, he started to write a book based on his life experience, what he had learned, and what had worked for him.  Jon originally wrote the book for his children, in order to attempt to save them the time that it had taken him to work it all out, but after much peer review, he was encouraged to publish the first edition in 2020, and a second edition was published in 2022.

In 2023 Jon started teaching the principles set out in his book, and he has a number of private clients that he is working with.  Jon has seen some extraordinary results, for which he is very grateful for.

Since around 2018, Jon has been actively using Rife Pulsed Electromagnetic Frequency (PEMF) healing and remote healing technology, and also makes a very special blend of nano-colloidal silver.  Jon has a range of healing technologies, including an original Nikola Tesla violet ray device.

Testimonials

When AMTE collapsed, I considered starting a solid-state battery company and Jon was extremely helpful talking to him. Based on his experience, he shared a lot of useful information with me on the need for NDA’s, writing a business plan, and potential routes to obtaining funding.

The only bottleneck was the fact that I had no proof of concept, which didn’t please investors. Jon is extremely kind and very knowledgeable in this, and I cannot thank him enough.
